SYNOPSIS:
As a child, his mother often told him about her happiest childhood
on the Russian island called "Sakhalin". But he was a
young boy in a modern Tokyo obsessed with American culture, especially
movies. At age 20 he came to the U.S.. Nine years later he found
himself studying film at UCLA, and started thinking of his parents
in Japan who were in their 60s now. In 1992 due to Gorbachev's glasnost
policy, he and his sister were able to take their mother back to
"Sakhalin" after 46 years, and relive her story through
devastating World War II. The son learns more about himself and
